Dr. Arvind Singhal is an expert in Positive Deviance and is a professor at the University of Texas where he teaches a semester-long course in positive deviance. He also has a book on the subject, which will launch on June 11th.

Positive Deviance is an approach to problem solving, where someone or a group of people/organization/etc. (knowingly or unknowingly!) use different strategies or exhibit different behaviors that lead to better results than others facing the same challenge even when they have comparable skills, resources, and knowledge.

Trying to get to the root of why some people are more successful at certain challenges is a challenge in itself! But, when you can tap into what behavior or strategy is working, you can try to replicate results. Arvind says the more difficult the problem, the more in need it is of positive deviance.

Talking to Arvind was fascinating, and as with so many of our interviews, we left wanting more! His examples of how positive deviance works in real life were amazing. Be sure to check out the full interview on Thursday!
